Cameron Davis secured his second Rocket Mortgage Classic title with a steady and decisive performance.
The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit saw Cameron Davis emerge victorious, clinching his second title at the event in four years. Davis finished at 18-under-par 270, one shot clear of a tightly contested leaderboard featuring Akshay Bhatia, Aaron Rai, and Davis Thompson.
Davis’s win was solidified when Bhatia, who had led or shared the lead throughout the tournament, three-putted from 32 feet on the 18th green. This misstep handed Davis his second victory at Detroit Golf Club, making him the first two-time winner of the tournament since its inception in 2019.
"It was a combination of shock and feeling bad for him," Davis remarked about Bhatia's missed putt. "At the same time, realizing that the huge burden of trying to win again is off the shoulders. It's still a bit of a shock."
Bhatia had played impressively throughout the tournament, not recording a single three-putt or more than one bogey until the final hole. Seeking his second PGA Tour win of the season and third of his career, Bhatia’s steady performance included a 31-foot birdie putt on the 4th hole and another birdie on the 7th. However, he faltered on the 18th, allowing Davis to claim the title.
"It's a very tough situation to be in for him and for someone to be the benefactor, that is a bit of a weird situation to be in but at the same time there's so much relief because it's been a long time since I've been on top," Davis said.
Cameron Young was also a key figure in the final round drama. Trailing by one on the 14th hole, Young hit an errant drive and then cracked the shaft of his driver in frustration by leaning on it. PGA Tour rules prevented him from replacing the broken club, forcing him to rely on his 3-wood for the remaining holes. Young finished the tournament tied for sixth at 15-under after a round of 73.
Davis's steady play, including key up-and-downs from just outside the bunker on the par-5 17th and from the rough on the 18th, was enough to secure his victory. His consistency under pressure, particularly on the back nine, proved decisive.
"I left those chips in the best place I could," Davis said of his critical shots.
The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic was a showcase of intense competition and dramatic moments, culminating in Cameron Davis's second victory at Detroit Golf Club. The tournament highlighted the resilience and skill of the players, setting the stage for more thrilling golf in the future.
